During the 2022-2023 school year, Dr. Melissa Busbin received a Bright Ideas grant through Colquitt EMC. Her grant proposal focused on teaching classic critical thinking skills of traditional board games with a modern way to connect and align with computer programming and technology. She aimed to inspire students to develop their own games as they developed computational thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork. Tift County High School and Tift County School System believe in building lasting relationships with students that translate into learning in a positive environment. With the money received from the awarded grant, Dr. Busbin purchased an Infinity Game table for her information technology-based classroom. Dr. Busbin stated in her proposal that she hoped to mesh the bonds that were built over the traditional family game night played at the kitchen table with emerging technology in hopes of teaching students conflict resolution, problem-solving skills, and teamwork, all while building connections in the classroom that made it possible for classmates to become family. The gaming table takes classic games and brings them to life on the digital tabletop. We students returned to campus this year, Dr. Busbin was thrilled to have students from the previous year ask her when they could finish their Monopoly game. “Several of the students had saved a game in the table’s memory card at the end of last school year, and within 24 hours of returning to school, they were asking to play the game,” stated Busbin. “We are very thankful to be able to provide this learning experience to our students.” In addition to the table, Dr. Busbin also purchased flexible seating to provide a more relaxed and comfortable environment for this learning experience. #BTTY #4theT #BrightIdeasGrant
